Mortgages for the Self Employed
Securing a self employed mortgage or remortgage has always been a challenge because it is not always straightforward in proving your income.
In the past ‘self certify’ was an option giving you the opportunity to declare your income without the need for formal accounts.
As a result of the failure of some banks and the downturn in the economy, lending practices came under a lot of scrutiny paticularly around proving income. The Regulator has effectively banned self certified mortgages and these are no longer available.
The Lenders though do not want to stop lending to self employed people or Company Directors paticularly as there are more and more people who are self employed.
Lenders then have tried to be more innovative when it comes to Lending to the self employed which means that whilst you will have to have been self employed for at least a year, some Lenders will accept one years account history.
